Leah Hume: From Job Seeker to Full-Time Barista
Leah Hume, now a full-time barista and cafe worker at Neighbourhood Coffee House, has embarked on an inspiring journey under the mentorship of owner Loni Hansen.
We first met Leah at Kuranui College in late 2023, during her search for full-time employment. As the deputy head girl, Leah was balancing part-time roles at The Landing Girl Pirinoa Coffee House and Three Little Words Restaurant. However, these seasonal positions were set to end by February 2024.
To support Leah’s job search, we assisted her in updating her CV, honing her interview skills, and visiting local businesses to distribute her resume. This proactive approach paid off when Loni Hansen heard about Leah’s efforts, interviewed her, and offered her a full-time position. Additionally, we involved MSD work broker Phil to provide support to the business.
Loni has been highly impressed with Leah’s rapid adaptation to her new role, particularly her proficiency with the coffee machine and customer service skills.
Leah recently celebrated her 90-day milestone at Neighbourhood Coffee House, an achievement that Youth2Work marked by presenting Loni Hansen with a certificate. The event, attended by South Wairarapa Mayor Martin Connelly, recognised Loni’s commitment to employing and supporting local youth in sustainable careers.
Leah’s journey from job seeker to a valued team member is a testament to her dedication and the community’s support in fostering local talent.
